Causes and strategic setting
On October seventh, twenty-five fifty-nine, the stealth insertion craft Special Delivery entered Reach’s atmosphere carrying Blue Team, two pilots, a technical specialist, and industrial drilling equipment. Banished Seraphs detected the approach before the craft reached its landing area. The pilots tried to disguise their descent as a meteor, shedding decoys and using a punishing maneuver to break the pursuit. The deception worked. The aircraft still crashed after unsecured excavation machinery tore through its cargo compartment. Operation WOLFE had reached Reach. Its transportation plan had not survived the first hour. The mission had one objective. John One One Seven, Frederic One Zero Four, Kelly Zero Eight Seven, and Linda Zero Five Eight were to enter the ruins of Castle Base beneath Menachite Mountain and recover the remaining cryogenically preserved clone brains created by Doctor Catherine Halsey. Those biological assets were needed to build an artificial intelligence capable of stopping Cortana. Without them, the United Nations Space Command possessed no credible method for breaking the Created occupation. With them, it might gain one opportunity.
That made Operation WOLFE a strategic retrieval mission disguised as a covert raid. Infinity could not hold Reach, fight every Banished clan on the surface, and remain hidden from the Guardians at the same time. Blue Team did not need to reconquer the planet. It needed to reach one laboratory, remove one irreplaceable resource, and leave before the fighting revealed Infinity’s location. The difficulty was that Castle Base lay beneath a world the Covenant had burned, the Banished had occupied, and human settlers had begun rebuilding without waiting for the wider war to become convenient. Cortana’s uprising had removed the normal support behind such an operation. Earth’s command networks were compromised. Shipyards and supply depots could be watched or disabled. Artificial intelligences had divided in their loyalties, while Guardians could paralyze a fleet through one attenuation pulse. Infinity survived through unpredictable slipspace jumps and brief contact with isolated facilities. Returning to Reach therefore risked more than Blue Team. A detected transmission, an active satellite, or a compromised navigation record could expose the mobile headquarters sustaining human resistance.
Halsey’s requirement explains why that risk was accepted. Human smart artificial intelligences were created through a destructive scan of a donor brain. Cortana had been based on illegal flash-cloned neural tissue derived from Halsey herself. The new intelligence needed the same neurological foundation so it could resemble Cortana closely enough to enter her systems, isolate her, and prepare her for deletion. Halsey had left the last usable clone brains in cryogenic storage beneath Castle Base. Humanity had advanced laboratories aboard Infinity. It did not possess another copy of the required donor. The target also carried the weight of an older war. Reach had been Blue Team’s training ground, a center of human military power, and the place where most Spartan Twos had been killed or listed missing during the Covenant invasion. Castle Base had served as one of Halsey’s most protected research sites. In twenty-five fifty-two, she destroyed its artificial intelligences and ordered the facility demolished rather than let its secrets fall into Covenant hands. The mountain concealed surviving chambers, buried mines, collapsed passages, and a Forerunner complex no human government had ever fully controlled.

Opposing powers and objectives
Seven years of reconstruction had not restored the planet that fell. Vast areas remained vitrified, unstable, and environmentally dangerous. Atmospheric repair and reclamation projects had created habitable zones, while returning pioneers established settlements among the ruins. The Viery Militia protected those communities with recovered weapons, local knowledge, and personnel who understood that help from outside might arrive late or not at all. Reach was no longer an empty military memorial. People had returned because it was their home, and they had inherited every force interested in what remained beneath it. Preparation for WOLFE began weeks before the landing. Blue Team received Generation Three Mjolnir armor and tested it alongside Orbital Drop Shock Troopers of the Ninth Platoon at Perihelion Station. The new suits improved protection, power management, sensors, and field adaptability. They did not make drilling equipment lighter, repair parts unnecessary, or hostile air power less interested in the insertion craft. The armor prepared the Spartans for combat. The operation still depended on pilots, technicians, heavy machinery, local transport, orbital masking, and a ship willing to approach an occupied world.
Three Anlace-class light frigates helped create a full-spectrum jamming blanket around Reach. Longsword crews destroyed or disabled old satellites that might transmit evidence of the operation beyond the system. This was less a communications blackout than an effort to control how quickly the wrong intelligence could leave the planet. The Created did not need a detailed after-action report. One suspicious signal could bring a Guardian. The orbital force therefore had to suppress transmissions without advertising that someone powerful enough to suppress them had returned. Special Delivery was a D One Zero Two Owl built for stealth insertion, but its cargo made stealth unusually ambitious. Blue Team needed excavation jumbos capable of moving through the glasslands and opening routes into the mountain. A Spartan fireteam can defeat a defended position. It cannot punch through every kilometer of collapsed rock with rifles and optimism. The aircraft carried the physical means to reach the objective, which also meant that one damaged restraint inside the cargo bay could threaten the entire mission.
Major Eznik Van Houte and Lieutenant Maks Chapov saved most of the passengers during the descent. After the hard landing, the cockpit was trapped beneath fused material while Banished aircraft searched the area. John and Kelly refused to abandon the pilots and pulled them free. Van Houte then destroyed Special Delivery, catching the pursuing Seraphs in the blast and denying the enemy a recoverable intelligence prize. The team survived. Its stealth craft, orbital return vehicle, and carefully packed insertion plan became a crater. The Banished presence was larger than human intelligence had hoped. War Chief Escharum had divided the search of Reach among three Jiralhanae-led formations. The Keepers of the One Freedom were commanded by Castor, a religious leader who still believed the Halo Array should be fired. The Clan of the Ravaged Tusks and the Legion of the Corpse-Moon pursued their own profit and status under the Banished structure. Cooperation existed because Escharum demanded it. Rivalry existed because each commander expected the others to steal whatever they found.
03
Opening operations
Their objective lay under the same mountain as Halsey’s laboratory. Atriox remained stranded on the Ark after losing his carrier in the war against the Spirit of Fire. Banished records had identified a Forerunner portal beneath Reach that might connect with Installation Zero Zero. Escharum ordered the three clans to locate the Portal under the Mountain and provide Atriox a route home. Months of excavation had produced little. Then a human stealth craft arrived carrying Spartans and drilling machines toward Menachite Mountain. Castor correctly concluded that the newcomers knew where something important was hidden. He did not know the contents of Halsey’s cryogenic vaults, and Blue Team did not know the Banished were searching for a portal. Each force interpreted the other through incomplete intelligence. The humans saw occupation units obstructing a retrieval mission. Castor saw Reclaimers arriving with the tools needed to open the sacred route he had failed to find. Operation WOLFE became a pursuit before either side understood the other’s objective.
Movement across Reach proved nearly as dangerous as direct combat. The excavation machines became stuck in frozen glass and broken terrain. Banished aircraft could patrol routes faster than the ground party could move. Blue Team split its effort, leaving Fred with the pilots, technical specialist Sella Mukai, and the heavy equipment while John, Kelly, and Linda searched for transport and intelligence. Dividing the team reduced local strength. Keeping everyone with the immobile machinery would have allowed the Banished to concentrate against one stationary target. The separated groups encountered the human reclamation effort. The Viery Militia had organized communities across the region and fought the Banished occupation with whatever equipment could be recovered, repaired, or hidden. Its personnel knew old tunnels, water systems, mining routes, and the condition of settlements erased from current military maps. They also had their own chain of command and their own casualties. Blue Team needed their assistance. The militia needed relief from an enemy strong enough to divide the planet among competing clans.
New Mohács became the center of that temporary alliance. The Banished had established an armory within the rebuilt city and used the position to support operations across the basin. Seizing it would provide vehicles, ammunition, and a defensible point from which Infinity could support the final advance. The militia also possessed nuclear weapons that could not be allowed to fall into Banished hands or be detonated carelessly. A nuclear signature might remove one local problem and notify Cortana that a larger one had appeared on Reach. Blue Team’s route to the armory involved tunnels, militia rangers, and the usual reminder that underground approaches are planned by people who have not yet met the underground. The assault group breached a methane pocket and had to ventilate the passage before the gas disabled the humans who lacked sealed Mjolnir systems. The delay nearly exposed the operation. It also illustrated why Spartans did not replace conventional soldiers. Blue Team could continue in conditions that would incapacitate the rangers, but it still needed those rangers to guide, reinforce, and hold the route.
04
Escalation, command, and friction
The attack on New Mohács was a combined local action rather than a four-Spartan demonstration. Blue Team broke critical defenses and used captured Banished weapons. Viery units secured approaches and fought through the city. Pilots moved between firing positions while enemy aircraft and ground vehicles attempted to isolate the armory. The objective was not to kill every Banished soldier on Reach. It was to seize enough logistical infrastructure to keep the route to Castle Base open. The fighting imposed costs the official objective did not describe. Bella Disztl, a Reach survivor and celebrated endurance racer, drove John and Kelly through the battle until a Banished spike penetrated the Warthog and killed her. She had returned to help reclaim the world where she had built a life before the glassing. Her value to the mission came from driving skill, terrain knowledge, and the decision to remain when evacuation would have been safer. None of those qualities appeared in the equipment list Halsey sent with Blue Team.
Banished forces surrounded the captured armory and prepared to retake it. The covert phase had reached its limit. Captain Thomas Lasky brought Infinity toward Reach and ordered a mass deployment. One hundred twenty Spartan Fours descended in drop pods, backed by Orbital Drop Shock Troopers arriving in Pelicans and Albatrosses under Broadsword cover. A mission that began with one stealth craft now placed one of the largest concentrations of Spartans ever deployed into the same planetary battlespace. The reinforcement was effective because it had specific jobs. Some units broke the Banished air screen and relieved New Mohács. Fireteams Taurus and Intrepid helped Commander Sarah Palmer secure the militia’s nuclear weapons so they could not be captured or used in a way that attracted Created attention. Orbital Drop Shock Troopers reinforced routes and landing zones. Fighters contested Banshees and Seraphs long enough for transport aircraft to move. Blue Team remained responsible for Castle Base because adding more Spartans did not make Halsey’s hidden laboratory easier to identify.
The mass landing changed the local balance, but it also started a clock. Infinity’s jamming and satellite suppression could delay external detection, not guarantee invisibility after hundreds of reentry vehicles, aircraft, and weapons systems began operating. Lasky had chosen to risk the flagship because Blue Team could not finish the mission without relief. The decision converted a likely tactical defeat into a renewed advance. It also made withdrawal before a Guardian arrived more important than permanent control of the ground. Blue Team received medical attention, ammunition, and armor repair before moving toward Menachite Mountain. This was another quiet limitation of elite operations. John and the others had survived repeated engagements in Generation Three Mjolnir, but their bodies were injured and the suits had absorbed damage that technicians needed to correct. The team’s ability to continue depended on a field support network brought down by Infinity. A Spartan can operate for long periods without a base. That does not mean the base has become optional.
05
Outcome and immediate consequences
The final approach required another low-level flight through Banished air defenses. Chapov piloted the Pelican carrying Blue Team toward Castle Base while Banshees pursued and ground weapons reached into the route. He kept the aircraft moving until damage forced it down against a Banished position. Chapov was pinned in the cockpit by wreckage and knew extraction would kill him before the team could carry him clear. He remained behind with a missile launcher and used the crippled Pelican as a final firing position while Blue Team continued toward the mountain. John later reached the old bell used during Spartan training on Reach. He struck it three times with suppressed rifle fire in recognition of Chapov’s sacrifice. The act did not change the mission or the casualty report. It connected the returning Spartans to a pilot who had arrived as support personnel and died ensuring they reached the place where their own service had begun. Operation WOLFE was carried by more people than the four names attached to its objective.
Castle Base was not waiting behind an intact security door. Halsey’s demolition, Covenant excavation, postwar collapse, and the surrounding Forerunner structures had turned the mountain into a layered ruin. Blue Team used industrial equipment, climbing routes, and surviving internal systems to reach the laboratory. The mission’s most valuable cargo had remained alive only because cryogenic storage continued functioning beneath a planet that had lost most of its surface civilization. The Spartans recovered the cryobins containing Halsey’s remaining cloned neural material. They had reached the stated objective, but the Banished had followed their movement into the same complex. Fred recognized Veta Lopis among Castor’s human followers and understood that an Office of Naval Intelligence team was operating under deep cover inside the Keepers. Exposing her would have created a firefight and destroyed an intelligence penetration that had taken years to establish. Blue Team therefore had to distinguish enemy collaborators from undercover allies while carrying a biological asset whose loss could not be replaced.
Castor’s force found the portal complex beneath the mountain. The discovery confirmed his belief that the human mission had led him to a sacred route, even though Blue Team had never intended to reveal it. Banished personnel opened the connection to the Ark, and Atriox returned to the Milky Way aboard a Lich with a small group of senior followers. The operation that gave humanity a weapon against Cortana also restored the commander most capable of exploiting Cortana’s eventual weakness. Castor then betrayed the Banished and took the Keepers through the portal to the Ark, intending to activate the Halo Array. Veta Lopis and the Ferret team remained embedded and traveled with him. Their continued infiltration later helped prevent that attempt, but WOLFE had already widened the conflict beyond Reach. The mountain contained two objectives. Humanity recovered one. The Banished and Keepers activated the other. Both sides departed believing the operation had served their larger war.
06
Long-term military significance
Blue Team extracted with Orbital Drop Shock Troopers and returned to Infinity on October twelfth. Human and Banished forces withdrew before a Guardian reached Reach. The Viery Militia regained important territory around the Arany Basin, and some United Nations Space Command personnel remained to support the reclamation effort. This was not the restoration of Reach as humanity’s former military capital. It was a local reversal of occupation achieved inside a strategic withdrawal. Halsey used the recovered clone brains to create the Weapon. The new artificial intelligence shared Cortana’s donor architecture without sharing her accumulated memories, relationships, or political identity. She was designed to enter Zeta Halo, imitate Cortana closely enough to lock her down, and prepare both herself and the target for deletion. In December, the Weapon completed the essential part of that mission. Cortana lost access to the systems that had made her empire possible. Atriox’s return produced the opposite consequence. Once back in the galaxy, he rejoined the Banished leadership, resisted Cortana, survived the destruction of his homeworld, and prepared the ambush at Zeta Halo. His forces later struck Infinity before the human operation could proceed as planned. The same campaign that supplied Halsey’s countermeasure also returned the commander who would shatter the platform carrying it.
Measured tactically, Operation WOLFE succeeded. Blue Team reached Castle Base, recovered the cryobins, survived extraction, and helped break the Banished hold around New Mohács. Measured operationally, Infinity delivered enough force to preserve the mission and withdrew before the Created could trap it. Measured strategically, the result was divided. Humanity obtained the Weapon. The Banished obtained Atriox. The Viery settlers recovered ground, while Reach remained too damaged and exposed to become the secure base it had once been. The operation also demonstrated what the post-Created United Nations Space Command could still accomplish. Infinity coordinated stealth craft, jamming frigates, fighter sweeps, Spartan fireteams, Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, technicians, and local militia across a contested planet. That system was powerful when it could concentrate briefly. It was fragile because every concentration risked detection, and every irreplaceable component traveled aboard one flagship. Returning to Reach did not reverse the defeat of twenty-five fifty-two. It showed what survived beneath it. Halsey’s hidden laboratory preserved the biological foundation for another artificial intelligence. The Viery communities preserved a human claim to the planet. The portal preserved a route between Reach and the Ark for whoever found it first. Ruins do not belong automatically to the people who built them, particularly when several armies arrive with excavation equipment.
Operation WOLFE became the hinge between Cortana’s occupation and the battle for Zeta Halo. Blue Team carried away the neural material that made Cortana vulnerable. Castor opened the route that made Atriox available. Two months later, the Weapon locked Cortana down while the Banished broke Infinity above the ring. The cargo humanity recovered from Reach created its best chance to win. The door it exposed created the enemy waiting when that chance arrived.
