The most powerful weapon in a fleet is useless if its commander does not know where the enemy is. This episode examines reconnaissance as the foundation of Halo warfare, from long-range naval sensors and stealthy prowlers to ground scouts, satellites, drones, and Spartan reconnaissance missions. Prowlers allow the UNSC to observe Covenant formations, deploy surveillance equipment, and gather signals intelligence without committing larger ships to detection. Ground forces use scouts and forward observers to identify enemy positions before artillery, armor, or airpower engages them. Covenant forces employ their own sensors, active camouflage, reconnaissance units, and advanced detection systems. Intelligence is never perfect. Ships emerge from slipspace unexpectedly, electronic interference hides movement, and commanders may act on information already outdated by the time it reaches them. Many Halo disasters begin with someone failing to see the enemy soon enough. Reconnaissance creates options. Without it, even a superior plan becomes a reaction to whatever the enemy has already decided to do.
