The Hoffan drug offered human worlds a biological defense against feeding, but its protection came at a cost severe enough to destroy the society it was meant to save. Developed by the Hoffans after generations of Wraith cullings, the treatment altered human blood so that any Wraith attempting to feed would be poisoned and killed. This episode examines the drug’s strategic logic: if enough people became lethal prey, the Wraith might abandon the planet or lose entire culling forces. Early trials revealed the terrible price. Roughly half of those treated died from the procedure, and Hoffan leaders were willing to accept those losses in exchange for future freedom. The Wraith later exterminated the civilization to prevent the defense from spreading. Michael recovered and refined aspects of the research for use against rival Wraith, turning a desperate protective measure into a weapon of wider biological war.
