The Aschen Confederation conquers without invasion fleets, occupation armies, or public executions. It approaches vulnerable worlds with medicine, agricultural technology, and promises of membership in a peaceful interplanetary order. The mechanism beneath that offer is demographic warfare: an anti-aging treatment that gradually suppresses fertility, allowing populations to decline while Aschen administrators absorb their territory and resources. The Volians demonstrate the result, reduced from an industrial civilization to an agricultural society with little knowledge of what had been taken from them. Earth encountered one possible future in which partnership with the Aschen produced prosperity before concealed infertility threatened human extinction. A later first-contact attempt revealed the pattern early enough for Stargate Command to break negotiations and mark the Aschen address as forbidden.
