The Nox possess abilities that could make them formidable military powers, yet they reject warfare almost completely. One of the four great races allied in the distant past, they can conceal people and entire cities, heal grave injuries, and restore life after apparent death. SG-1 first encountered them during Apophis’s hunt for the flying creature called the Fenri. The team initially mistook Nox restraint for helplessness, only to discover that their hosts understood the danger and had chosen nonviolence from a position of extraordinary capability. Nox pacifism challenges the assumptions guiding Stargate Command: advanced technology does not inevitably produce stronger armies, and refusing to fight is not necessarily the same as being unable to defend oneself. Their philosophy also carries costs, because the Nox rarely intervene in the wider suffering caused by the Goa’uld. They offer sanctuary and wisdom, but not the kind of alliance Earth repeatedly hopes to obtain. Visit ImaginedBattlefield.com for more military and science fiction.
