The Asgard are one of the galaxy’s oldest surviving powers, remembered on Earth through Norse mythology and recognized by the Ancients, Nox, and Furlings as members of a great interstellar alliance. Based primarily in the Ida galaxy, they used superior ships, transporters, sensors, and defensive technology to protect selected human worlds from Goa’uld conquest. Their civilization nevertheless contained a profound contradiction. Scientific achievements made the Asgard appear nearly omnipotent to younger peoples, yet dependence on repeated cloning had damaged their genetics and threatened their species with extinction. At the same time, the Replicators consumed Asgard technology and forced them into a war they could not easily win. Relations with Earth developed from cautious observation into strategic partnership because humans combined Ancient potential with unconventional tactics. The Asgard protected the Milky Way where they could, but their declining population and expanding machine war meant that even their power had strict limits.
