THE ARSENAL OF HALO

Pelicans, Falcons, Hornets, and Wasps

S10E18

UNSC aircraft connect soldiers on the ground with the larger aerospace battle above them. The Pelican is the essential dropship, carrying troops, vehicles, cargo, and casualties between ships, bases, and landing zones. The Falcon provides lighter utility transport and aerial fire support, while the Hornet brings compact attack and mobility capabilities directly over the battlefield. The later Wasp offers another highly mobile VTOL platform suited to reconnaissance and combat. This episode examines these aircraft according to what they allow commanders to do. Air mobility can bypass blocked roads, reinforce isolated units, evacuate wounded personnel, and place troops on objectives before a ground column could arrive. Attack aircraft can suppress enemy positions and escort vulnerable transports. The same advantages create dependencies: aircraft require maintenance, pilots, secure airspace, fuel, and bases or ships from which to operate. Pelicans become iconic because nearly every ground operation depends on something like them. Armies fight where aviation can deliver them—and survive when aviation can bring them home.
