Jul ’Mdama: The Didact’s Hand

Jul ’Mdama becomes one of the postwar galaxy’s most important Covenant leaders because he understands that religious belief can still organize military power after the old empire is gone. This episode follows Jul from Sangheili husband and political outsider to prisoner of humanity, enemy of the Arbiter, and leader of a new Covenant faction. His experiences reinforce his conviction that humanity intends to weaken or dominate the Sangheili, while his discovery of routes to Forerunner worlds gives him the religious legitimacy needed to attract followers. On Requiem, Jul’s forces awaken the Didact and he takes the title of the Didact’s Hand, presenting himself as intermediary between living Forerunners and believers desperate for renewed purpose. His organization fights Infinity, Spartan fireteams, and the Swords of Sanghelios before Jul is eventually killed on Kamchatka. His death is sudden because his real achievement had already occurred: he proved the Covenant’s institutions could die while its faith remained powerful enough to raise another army.
