Avery Johnson fights through more phases of humanity’s interstellar military history than almost any other enlisted soldier. A veteran of Project ORION, he carries the legacy of humanity’s first supersoldier program long before the Spartan-IIs become public heroes. This episode follows Johnson from counterinsurgency and first contact at Harvest through Alpha Halo, Earth, Delta Halo, the Great Schism, and the final battles on the Ark. His importance comes not from commanding fleets or possessing Mjolnir armor, but from being the kind of senior noncommissioned officer military organizations depend upon. Johnson understands soldiers, maintains morale, leads from the front, and repeatedly translates strategic objectives into actions Marines can execute under fire. He is also one of the first humans to work effectively beside Sangheili forces during the alliance against Truth and the Flood. Johnson dies helping activate Installation 08, ending a career that connects humanity’s secret prewar programs to the final victory of the Covenant War.
