Orbital Defense Platforms are humanity’s attempt to turn vulnerable planets into targets dangerous enough to threaten even Covenant capital ships. Built around enormous MACs, these stations can deliver firepower beyond that of most individual UNSC warships and create defensive zones through which an attacker must pass. This episode examines the networks protecting Reach and Earth and why the guns cannot be understood separately from their supporting infrastructure. Platforms need sensors, targeting data, communications, crews, and enormous power supplies. On Reach, surface-based generators became critical targets because destroying them could silence the orbital weapons without defeating every station directly. Covenant commanders therefore attacked the defense system simultaneously in space and on the ground. Earth’s platforms likewise formed the backbone of the planet’s defensive perimeter during the 2552 invasion. Orbital defense works when every component remains connected. A giant gun in space is formidable; a giant gun without power, intelligence, or supporting forces is simply an enormous target.
