The Great Schism and the Sangheili Purge

The Great Schism begins when the Covenant’s internal rivalry becomes a deliberate attempt by the Prophet of Truth to replace the Sangheili with the Jiralhanae and eliminate leaders who might challenge him. Regret’s death accelerates the transition, and violence spreads through Delta Halo, High Charity, and Covenant fleets. This episode examines the purge of Sangheili councilors, the elevation of Jiralhanae forces, and the moment the empire’s military structure divides against itself. The Arbiter discovers that the Prophets have lied about Halo and survives Tartarus’s attempt to kill him, while Sangheili commanders who once fought humanity begin recognizing that Truth represents a greater immediate threat. The Schism is not a clean ideological split. Old rivalries, local commanders, religious loyalties, and survival determine who fights whom. Yet the strategic result is unmistakable: the Covenant stops functioning as one military empire. Humanity survives partly because its enemy begins destroying itself at the moment it appears closest to final victory.
