Alpha-Nine and the Occupation of the City

Alpha-Nine enters New Mombasa as an ODST squad expecting one mission and is scattered across the city when Regret’s slipspace jump tears apart the original operation. This episode examines the Covenant occupation through the experiences of Edward Buck, Veronica Dare, the Rookie, Dutch, Mickey, and Romeo. Separated during the drop, the troopers fight through darkened streets, ruined infrastructure, Covenant patrols, and collapsing defensive positions while gradually reconstructing what happened to their team. Their mission ultimately becomes an intelligence operation centered on a Huragok carrying valuable information about the Covenant and the city’s underground systems. The squad must extract the Engineer through territory the enemy controls while the larger battle for Earth continues beyond New Mombasa. Alpha-Nine’s experience shows the occupation from below the strategic level. There are no fleetwide solutions or superweapons—only isolated soldiers navigating one block at a time and trying to preserve an intelligence asset that may matter far beyond the city.
