The Battle of Installation 04 begins as a conventional struggle between surviving UNSC forces and the Covenant and ends as a three-sided war involving a parasite capable of consuming both armies. This episode examines how Captain Keyes abandons the damaged Pillar of Autumn, deploys personnel to the surface, and attempts to organize scattered survivors around Alpha Base. The Master Chief and Cortana rescue Marines, secure transport, assault Covenant positions, and investigate the ring while neither side initially understands what Halo actually is. The Covenant believes the installation is sacred and searches for the means to activate it. Human forces seek weapons, intelligence, and a way to survive long enough to escape. Within days, control of terrain and captured facilities matters less than preventing either the Covenant or 343 Guilty Spark from activating a weapon capable of killing sentient life across the galaxy.
