Operation RED FLAG was humanity’s desperate attempt to end the Covenant War with one extraordinarily dangerous special operation. The plan called for Spartan-IIs to board and capture a Covenant capital ship, use it to reach the enemy’s leadership, abduct a Prophet, and force negotiations before humanity’s remaining colonies were destroyed. This episode examines the logic behind the mission and why Reach became central to its preparation. The UNSC Pillar of Autumn was modified for the operation, surviving Spartans were gathered, and Cortana was assigned to support a mission depending on infiltration rather than fleet superiority. The plan revealed how desperate humanity had become: victory no longer meant defeating the Covenant military, but obtaining one political hostage important enough to stop it. RED FLAG never reached its intended target. The Covenant attacked Reach before the operation could launch, scattering the Spartans and forcing the Pillar of Autumn into a completely different mission. Humanity’s last planned offensive became the road to Halo instead.
