By 2543, Preston Cole had spent years fighting Covenant fleets that repeatedly outnumbered or outclassed the forces available to humanity. At Psi Serpentis, he faced more than three hundred enemy vessels and constructed one of the most audacious traps in UNSC naval history. This episode examines Cole’s maneuvers around the gas giant Viperidae, cooperation with unexpected Insurrectionist forces, and the deliberate provocation that drew the Covenant toward his flagship. Cole had prepared the planet itself as the final weapon. Nuclear detonations deep within Viperidae triggered a catastrophic reaction that destroyed the pursuing Covenant fleet and apparently consumed the UNSC Everest as well. Cole was officially presumed dead, creating the legend of his last stand. Later analysis raised questions about whether the admiral had planned an escape and disappeared deliberately. Either way, Psi Serpentis removed an enormous Covenant force from the war and ended the known career of the commander who had taught humanity how to fight it.
