The Cole Protocol: Denying the Enemy Earth

The Cole Protocol is humanity’s attempt to keep the Covenant from following retreating ships back to Earth and the remaining population centers of the Inner Colonies. Named for Admiral Preston Cole, the emergency order requires navigation information to be protected or destroyed, forbids retreat directly toward human worlds when Covenant forces could track the route, and demands the destruction of compromised vessels rather than allowing critical data to be captured. This episode examines the strategic logic behind an order severe enough to treat navigation records as potentially civilization-ending intelligence. A captain escaping a lost battle cannot simply plot the shortest route home; survival may require jumping in another direction while civilians and wounded crew wait aboard. Shipboard AIs and databases become assets that must never fall intact into enemy hands. The Cole Protocol sacrifices individual ships and crews to protect worlds they may never see again.
