A planet becomes dramatically harder to attack when enormous MACs in orbit can fire directly into an approaching fleet. This episode examines Orbital Defense Platforms and the networks that turned worlds such as Reach and Earth into the closest things humanity possessed to interstellar fortresses. These stations mount magnetic accelerator weapons larger and more powerful than those carried by most warships, allowing a defended planet to threaten Covenant capital ships at ranges where ordinary human vessels struggle to survive. The platforms do not operate alone. Sensors, fleets, fighters, surface installations, communications, and power infrastructure form one defensive system. Reach demonstrated the vulnerability of that network when Covenant ground operations threatened generators supporting its orbital guns. Fortress worlds therefore require armies below as much as fleets above. Orbital platforms give humanity a chance to create local firepower capable of matching superior ships, but only while every supporting element survives long enough to keep those guns firing.
