More than one hundred thousand years before the Human-Covenant War, humanity was already an interstellar civilization powerful enough to challenge the Forerunners. Ancient humans controlled numerous systems, fielded advanced fleets, and formed a major alliance with the San’Shyuum, the species later known through the Covenant Prophets. This episode examines that partnership and the strategic environment in which it developed. Humanity and the San’Shyuum shared military interests, technology, and territory while facing the expanding threat of the Flood. Their war against the parasite forced rapid decisions, extreme biological research, and the destruction of infected worlds. Those operations brought human forces into conflict with Forerunner territory, where attacks intended to contain the Flood appeared instead to be unprovoked expansion. The resulting misunderstanding became one of the most consequential intelligence failures in galactic history. Ancient humanity was not the primitive civilization the Forerunners later made it. It was a rival power fighting an enemy the ecumene did not yet understand.
