The Forerunner rebellion against the Precursors was one of the earliest acts of mass violence known in Halo history. According to surviving accounts, the Precursors intended to pass the Mantle of Responsibility to humanity rather than the Forerunners, judging their existing heirs unworthy. The Forerunners answered by attacking their creators across the galaxy and beyond. This episode examines that campaign as more than a mythic war between ancient species. It was a political revolt driven by fear of replacement, wounded legitimacy, and the refusal of an advanced civilization to accept judgment from those who had created it. Most Precursors were destroyed, while survivors fled, transformed themselves, or left behind remnants whose later corruption would have consequences no Forerunner commander anticipated. The war was largely erased or obscured in later Forerunner history, allowing the civilization responsible to claim the Mantle for itself. Their empire therefore began with a contradiction: a species claiming stewardship after nearly exterminating the beings who defined what stewardship meant.
