A single Lekgolo resembles a worm, but thousands joined together can form a coordinated intelligence with immense strength and specialized purpose. This episode examines the colonies most often encountered as Mgalekgolo—the armored pairs humans call Hunters—as well as the wider range of gestalts used in machinery, excavation, and war. Their bonded formations carry assault cannons and massive shields, coordinate as linked colonies, and fight with a unity that makes each pair more than two ordinary soldiers. The Covenant initially confronted the Lekgolo as a dangerous species consuming Forerunner material, then incorporated them after recognizing both their intelligence and usefulness. That relationship was never simple ownership. Lekgolo colonies possessed their own identities, loyalties, and reasons for serving particular commanders. Their ability to inhabit mechanical systems also blurred the boundary between crew, organism, and vehicle. Hunters appear to be living tanks, but the armor is only one shape chosen by a collective life-form capable of becoming many different kinds of machine.
