The Unggoy: The Largest Army Nobody Respected

S02E07

The Unggoy supplied the Covenant with enormous numbers of laborers, technicians, and infantry, yet the empire treated them as disposable. Native to the methane-rich world of Balaho, they required environmental tanks on most battlefields and were routinely placed in dangerous roles beneath Sangheili or Jiralhanae commanders. This episode examines how rapid learning, strong social bonds, and sheer demographic importance made the Unggoy far more capable than Covenant stereotypes admitted. Their great rebellion forced the empire to recognize that abused workers could threaten the entire system when organized, even though Balaho suffered devastating punishment. During the Human-Covenant War, Unggoy fought from fear, faith, coercion, ambition, and loyalty to their units—sometimes all at once. After the Covenant fell, they joined the Swords of Sanghelios, the Banished, remnant sects, and independent communities. The largest army nobody respected repeatedly proved that military hierarchy can conceal the true value of the people carrying its ammunition, repairing its machines, and filling its front lines.
