Jiralhanae society is built around packs, clans, chieftains, and fiercely personal bonds of loyalty. This episode traces a species that reached technological power, nearly destroyed itself during the Great Immolation, and later entered the Covenant under San’Shyuum authority. The Prophets valued Jiralhanae strength and ambition while exploiting rivalry with the Sangheili, eventually elevating the Brutes during the Great Schism. Pack discipline could produce formidable shock troops, but political competition among chieftains often made unity dependent on a leader strong enough to reward loyalty and punish defiance. The Covenant’s collapse released those traditions from Prophet control. Some Jiralhanae preserved the old faith, some fought for local survival, and others followed Atriox into the Banished. Atriox’s achievement was not erasing pack culture but scaling it into a wider confederation that could recruit many species and redirect loyalty toward victory, spoils, and shared defiance. The road to the Banished began inside the empire that underestimated the warriors it used.
