The Insurrectionists: Rebels, Terrorists, and Colonial Independence

S02E02

The Insurrectionists were never one army with one ideology. They were independence movements, local militias, political organizers, smugglers, guerrillas, criminal networks, and terrorist cells united mainly by opposition to Earth’s control. This episode examines why the same fighter could be remembered as a freedom-seeker on one colony and condemned as a murderer on another. Some groups targeted military facilities and colonial authorities; others accepted kidnappings, bombings, and attacks that killed civilians. The UNSC responded with surveillance, raids, emergency powers, and counterinsurgency campaigns that sometimes protected communities and sometimes deepened the anger driving recruitment. The Covenant War interrupted but never fully ended the conflict, and postwar factions such as the New Colonial Alliance again challenged the UEG’s claim to police independent worlds. Understanding the Insurrection requires resisting easy labels. Colonial grievances were often real, but legitimate demands did not make every method defensible—and UNSC security needs did not make every act of repression necessary.
