The oldest war in Halo begins before the Forerunners ruled the galaxy. The Precursors were an ancient civilization of unmatched power that shaped life, traveled through neural-physical structures, and claimed authority over the Mantle of Responsibility. When the Forerunners learned that humanity rather than their own species might inherit that role, they rebelled against their creators and carried out a near-extermination. This episode examines the Mantle as both a philosophy of stewardship and a justification for empire. It also follows the surviving legacy of the Precursors through the Primordial, the corruption of ancient dust, and the long path by which vengeance returned as the Flood. The conflict transforms later history: Forerunner guilt, human devolution, the Flood War, and the firing of Halo all emerge from decisions made in this first struggle over who had the right to guide life. The galaxy’s oldest war was therefore not fought over territory alone, but over succession, legitimacy, and the meaning of responsibility.
