Spartans: How Super-Soldiers Became Humanity’s Last Hope

The Spartans are not one program but several generations of super-soldiers created for different wars. This episode traces the path from Project ORION and the SPARTAN-I soldiers to the abducted children of the SPARTAN-II program, the massed and often expendable SPARTAN-IIIs, and the adult volunteers who became SPARTAN-IVs. Each generation combines biological augmentation, extreme training, advanced armor, and missions ordinary forces are unlikely to survive. The episode also confronts the moral foundation of the programs. The Spartan-IIs were conceived during the Insurrection, long before the Covenant gave humanity a threat that could be used to justify their creation after the fact.
