HOW WAR IS FOUGHT

Aerospace Fighters: War From Atmosphere to Orbit

S08E20

Aerospace fighters operate across a battlespace no conventional aircraft can fully enter, moving between atmosphere and space to escort transports, intercept hostile craft, attack orbital targets, and support ground operations. This episode examines why aerospace control is usually temporary and local rather than absolute. Fighters may protect a DropShip during descent, suppress air defenses, strike supply routes, or prevent an enemy squadron from reaching a critical transport without ever destroying every hostile aircraft. Advanced technology improved engines, armor, sensors, weapons, and later OmniFighter configurations, while Clan aerospace forces demonstrated the benefits of centuries of continued development. Yet aircraft quality cannot overcome every operational limit. Pilots require specialized training, bases must remain functional, damaged craft need technicians and parts, and enormous volumes of atmosphere and space must be searched with imperfect information. Aerospace power works best when synchronized with reconnaissance, electronic warfare, artillery, DropShips, and ground forces that can exploit the window of control the fighters create.
