Stone’s Peace reduced the scale and frequency of interstellar warfare, but it did not erase the political causes of conflict. This episode examines the major wars of the Republic era, including the Second Combine-Dominion War, the Victoria War, and the Capellan Crusades. Each exposed a different weakness beneath the new order: Clan honor disputes, regional ambition, dynastic rivalry, contested borders, and populations that did not necessarily accept transfers negotiated generations earlier. Republic-era forces were smaller and more constrained than the mass armies of the Succession Wars, while functioning HPG communications made negotiation and coordinated ceasefires possible. That did not make combat gentle. Surprise landings, militia weakness, terrorism, local grievances, and limited reserves could still produce severe destruction on individual worlds. The Republic repeatedly prevented local wars from becoming general interstellar conflict, but every campaign demonstrated how much its stability depended on communications, central mediation, and governments still choosing to stop before every available reserve was committed.
