The FedCom Civil War transformed a dynastic struggle into five years of fighting across the shattered political inheritance of Hanse Davion and Melissa Steiner. Victor Steiner-Davion publicly turned against Katherine in December 3062 after violence had already erupted on worlds such as Kathil, Thorin, and Kentares and their brother Arthur was presumed killed. This episode examines why neither side was politically simple. Victor’s coalition included regulars, rebels, militia, mercenaries, and officers who considered Katherine’s orders illegitimate; Katherine’s forces included committed supporters, recognized government troops, Lyran nationalists, and officers who believed obedience preserved order. Victor eventually defeated his sister by building a broader coalition and winning separate campaigns for New Avalon and Tharkad. The price was enormous: fighting touched hundreds of worlds, killed tens of millions, damaged industry and transport, and destroyed military experience accumulated under the old united command. Victor removed Katherine from power, but victory could not restore the Federated Commonwealth. The superstate survived neither sibling’s claim to it.
