THE CLANS

Wardens and Crusaders: The Argument Over the Inner Sphere

S05E12

The Warden-Crusader divide was the great ideological argument over what the descendants of Kerensky owed the Inner Sphere. Wardens believed the Clans should preserve themselves and intervene only if humanity faced a threat it could not survive alone. Crusaders argued that centuries of Succession Wars proved the Great Houses were incapable of restoring the Star League and that Clan conquest was therefore a form of rescue. This episode traces how those positions evolved from political theories into rival movements capable of shaping entire military campaigns. The discovery of the Outbound Light strengthened Crusader fears that the Inner Sphere might reach Clan space first, helping secure authorization for Operation REVIVAL in 3048. Clan Wolf opposed the invasion but was compelled to participate after losing a Trial of Refusal. The distinction was never simply good against evil: Wardens could still support coercive Clan rule, while Crusaders could sincerely believe conquest would save lives. Their dispute concerned intervention, legitimacy, and who had the right to reunify humanity. Visit ImaginedBattlefield.com for more military and science fiction.
