The Star League died without a universally accepted heir, leaving the five Successor Lords to decide whether any one of them had the right to become First Lord. None was willing to accept another dynasty above their own, and Aleksandr Kerensky’s Exodus removed most of the Star League Defense Force from the Inner Sphere just as the political order collapsed. This episode examines the succession crisis that followed, including the Great Houses’ competing claims, their seizure of former Terran Hegemony worlds, and the disappearance of any neutral authority capable of enforcing compromise. What began as a constitutional dispute became a strategic race for territory, industry, technology, and legitimacy. Each ruler could portray expansion as preparation for reunification, but every rival interpreted it as a threat. By 2786, diplomacy had failed and the Successor States were moving toward a war that would destroy much of the civilization they hoped to inherit.
