Once faster-than-light travel became reliable, waves of settlers looked beyond Terra for opportunity, security, and independence. The First Great Migration carried colonists into nearby star systems and then steadily farther outward, establishing communities that would become the foundations of future interstellar states. This episode examines who left, why they departed, and what colonization demanded from people operating far beyond immediate help. Some migrants sought land or mineral wealth; others fled crowded cities, political conflict, discrimination, or the authority of the Terran government. New worlds offered freedom, but they also imposed harsh environments, limited infrastructure, and dependence on long supply lines. Over time, isolated settlements developed their own laws, cultures, and political expectations. The migration therefore did more than populate the stars. It weakened Terra’s ability to define a single human civilization and created the regional identities from which the Great Houses and Periphery powers would eventually emerge.
